Steph Gambill was hired as a Grand Rapids State Bank credit analyst in October 2015. The work she does in her job is an integral step in the process of the bank’s business loan process. Before loans are made, she and another colleague analyze and review financial information provided by prospective business customers. Using this data, she’s able to confirm the customer’s payback sources, cash flows, business trends, and determine the bank’s risk position.
“We run all the numbers,” Steph says, “and help the lenders determine if the loan is a good fit for the bank.
“We get to know quite a lot about the business, at least from the financial perspective,” continued Steph. “Occasionally the lenders will take us with them to visit the customer in person, especially on newer deals. It helps us better understand what the customer is trying to do with the money they’re hoping to loan, and it puts more context to the loan request.
“We credit analysts are another link to our customers, and although we typically don’t have a lot of face time we are another source of contact other than the lender,” Steph said. “I enjoy visiting our customers; it allows me to get to know the real people and businesses behind the spreadsheets and financial statements that we analyze all day long.”
Steph grew up in Moorhead, Minnesota. Steph’s path to Grand Rapids came through her love of hockey. She enrolled at Itasca Community College while playing for the Minnesota Crunch, a women’s junior hockey team based in Grand Rapids.
After two years at ICC, she attended North Dakota State University across the river in Fargo. She majored in accounting with a minor in fraud investigation. During college she worked as a bank teller in the Fargo area, and during her senior year she completed an internship in the bank’s operations, accounting, and compliance departments.
“Through mutual friends I met Justin Gambill, a Grand Rapids native,” she continued.
“We began dating and were married in the fall of 2015. I took the job at GRSB that October.”
Steph and Justin have one child, Briella (aged 18 months), and are expecting a second in January. When she’s not working or busy with her family, Steph enjoys physical activities, such as workouts at Spartan Fitness and hunting.
“I enjoy the banking business,” Steph added, “and I would like to continue my career in community banking. I’d love the opportunity to work my way up to a lender and eventually to move into management.”
